Vanessa Lachey on the Two Things That Keep Her Marriage Healthy

It’s been 16 years since Vanessa and Nick Lachey got together and 11 years since they got married, and so The Ultimatum: Marry or Move On cohost has had time to learn a thing or two about the secrets to a long-lasting relationship. The 41-year-old mom-of-three says two types of communication are crucial.

“. . . I don’t mean just like talking to each other. I mean getting down and dirty and talking about what bothers you, concerns you. And so we’ve communicated both in a loving way of telling that other person, not just on Instagram, but to make sure you have that human connection of saying, ‘I think you’re incredible. I think you are the best daddy in the world. I think you’re amazing,’ ” she says.

“And then the bad. . . . . We’re not afraid to say that it’s healthy to have therapy, and I don’t mean therapy because things are going wrong. I mean you need to have therapy when things are good and remind yourself why it’s good and it’s working, but also therapy to hash out why it didn’t work and why it derailed to give you the tools in how to handle being in a relationship not only in this industry but also a mother and father of three young kids who are developing their own little mini personalities. And that alone is stressful,” she says.

The NCIS Hawai’i star has also added a new title of late, spokesperson for Allegra Hives, a product she herself can personally vouch for. “I suffer from hives. It is something that has plagued me since I was a little girl,” she says, adding she’s tried ice baths, oatmeal baths, and more. “This is one of the partnerships that I have chomping at the bit,” she says. “We’ve been talking about this for months. And I’m so excited for this product.” It is the only oral, over-the-counter medication that attacks hives from the inside, out. And what’s key for moms, it’s non-drowsy. “It is my God-send,” she says.
