In a post-Harry Potter world, there’s it seems like every family is a sci-fi family — bring on the Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, and dystopian dramas, please! But if you’ve been associating sci-fi purely with tales of magic, fantasy, and galaxies far, far away, you’ve been missing out on one very special, often-romantic corner of the genre: stories about time travel. From Starz’s steamy, alluring Outlander to heartfelt dramas like About Time or The Time Traveler’s Wife, movies and TV shows that take you across time are period dramas, tales of heartbreak, and ruminations on the meaning of home all in one. With an exciting new addition to the genre out on October 15, Needle in a Timestack, we’re celebrating our favorite time travel stories on the big screen.
Needle in a Timestack tells the story of happily married Nick (Leslie Odom Jr.) and Janine (Cynthia Erivo), whose world is shattered by Janine’s ex-boyfriend (Orlando Bloom) warping time to try and break them up, with the help of Nick’s college girlfriend (Freida Pinto). A love you have to fight across time to get your way back to is a staple of the time-travel genre, and we can’t wait to see this star-studded cast’s iteration.
Read on for our favorite time travel movies and TV shows to share with your family next time it’s sci-fi night — if you’re in the mood for something a little more The Notebook and a little less The Hobbit, you’ll find it on this list.
