The Voice: Shakira's out. Guess who's back in?
NBC's The Voice is pulling another switcheroo. Newcomer Shakira is stepping down after just one season. She'll be replaced by none other than Christina Aguilera.
Shakira is here one season and gone the next. The Colombian singer confirmed that she's stepping away from The Voice. She replaced original judge Christina Aguilera alongside Usher, who took over for CeeLo Green.
According to Us Weekly, Shakira's reasons for leaving are mostly maternal.
"I'm not going to be able to do next season because I have to get back to my motherhood and also get back to the studio, the recording studio, to finish my album, the one that I started working on before I had to deliver a baby and before I took this gig with The Voice," she said. "So yeah, I have to take a little break. But you never know, I might come back!"
Fans of The Voice will get a blast from the past when Aguilera returns to claim her swivel chair. The "Dirty" singer will be back for Season 5.
But what about CeeLo? Well, his future is still unclear.
"I don't know. I think they are working on a deal to be honest with you, and I don't think it has been finalized," Carson Daly revealed. "I don't know the answer to that. It wouldn't surprise me if it was, sooner or later. It sounded like today it was like, 'Yeah, they are working on it,' which, usually those things work out, but I don't know."
Despite the casting change, The Voice is still a force to be reckoned with. It averages 14 million viewers per week. Shakira and Usher's additions were a pleasant surprise. It will be interesting to see how fans react to Aguilera's return.
The Voice airs Mondays and Tuesdays at 8/7c on NBC.
