Tom Cruise suing for $50 million for claims about Suri
The actor has been busy working, even after the divorce from Katie Holmes. But he doesn't appreciate anyone saying he's a bad father, and it's worth $50 million to him.
Tom Cruise has filed a lawsuit in a Los Angeles court over two magazines that made claims the actor abandoned his daughter. According to Entertainment Weekly, in the July issue of Life & Style, the headline read "Suri in Tears, Abandoned by Dad." But that isn't the only reason Cruise is suing. In the October issue of In Touch magazine, there was a similar headline. That one showed a photo of his daughter, Suri Cruise, with the headline "Abandoned by Daddy."
The reason Cruise filed one lawsuit against both magazines is that they are owned by the same company, Bauer Publishing. This might also explain the similarities between the two articles. The lawsuit filed today by Cruise's attorney is asking for $50 million in damages from the company for defamation and "false light invasion of privacy," according to Entertainment Weekly.
"Tom doesn't go around suing people. He's not a litigious guy," Cruise's lawyer, Bert Fields, said in the statement to TheWrap. "But when these sleaze peddlers try to make money with disgusting lies about his relationship with his child, you bet he's going to sue."
Fields said the actor will "most likely" donate the money to charity if he wins. Bayer Publishing did not comment on the suit.
"These serial defamers are foreign owned companies with their global headquarters in Hamburg. They take money from unsuspecting Americans by selling their malicious garbage," Fields told TheWrap. "Having to pay a libel judgment may slow them down. Tom will undoubtedly give the money to charity. He always has."
Tom Cruise and his wife, Katie Holmes, split up earlier this year after being married for only five years. Daughter Suri has been seen with both parents since the divorce, and Holmes even mentioned that when she is not with her father, Suri video chats with him regularly.
