The CW's Arrow is upping the ante. After an impressive debut, it has a lot to live up to. Tonight, it will do just that with the addition of a new villain — China White.

Kelly Hu

Kelly Hu is as beautiful as she is dangerous. She's one of the few actors with a legitimate background in martial arts. Throughout her career, Hu's had many action-heavy roles. And she's adding another to the list.

Hu debuts as China White on The CW's hit drama Arrow. She's a deadly foe who has plans for the superhero. According to TVLine, White is a recurring character with a connection to Oliver's past.

"Well, China White in the comic book is a character from the island [where Oliver was stranded], though they don’t really touch upon that in this first episode, " Hu revealed.

"So far I’ve shot three [episodes] and her background is a bit fuzzy, so that might be in the future. But you do know that she’s working with the Chinese mobsters."

White is in cahoots with the Triad and described as a stone-cold businesswoman. The role allowed Hu to tap into two things she loves — karate and the Chinese language. "I’m already a black belt in karate, and I’ve studied weapons... The fight choreography, I have to say, is pretty brutal... And I get to speak Chinese in this as well. I’ve been studying a bit of that, so when this came up I was like, 'Oh I can actually do this.'"

Hu is no stranger to playing comic book villains. In 2003 she appeared in the blockbuster X2: X-Men United as Yuriko Oyama aka Lady Deathstrike. She's also voiced several comic characters in animated films and shows such as Young Justice, Green Lantern: Emerald Knights and Batman: Under the Red Hood.

Arrow airs tonight at 8/7c on The CW.
