Kanye West up for 17 BET Hip-Hop Awards

While Kanye West wouldn’t normally be a surprise as the top nominee, the surprise comes from the fact that he hasn’t released a solo album in two years. But the multitalented rapper and producer came out on top anyways.

The nominees for the 2012 BET Hip-Hop Awards were announced on Thursday, and Kanye West came out on top, which is somewhat surprising since West didn’t come out with a solo album this year. Or last year for that matter.

“West received the most nominations with 17 for the seventh annual BET Hip-Hop Awards, which will air Oct. 9,” the Associated Press said. “The rapper has had a big year as a producer, performer and director. He also collaborated with Jay-Z on the album, Watch the Throne.”

The awards he is nominated for include Track of the Year, Producer of the Year, MVP of the Year, Lyricist of the Year, Hustler of the Year, Impact Track, CD of the Year, Best Live Performer, and Best Hip-Hop Video.

Many of the nominations were for his collaboration with Jay-Z, so he is up for some of the awards also. But some are also for West’s production work, or collaborations with others. In fact, his collaboration with Big Sean, Pusha T and 2 Chainz is up for the “Reese’s Perfect Combo Award,” an award for collaborators. Drake is up for two awards in that category, for his collaborations with 2 Chainz, and Lil Wayne and Tyga.

According to MTV, 2Chainz came in behind West with 13 nominations, with Drake close behind with 11.

“The ceremony will be taped Sept. 29 at Atlanta’s Boisfeuillet Jones Atlanta Civic Center. Actor and comedian Mike Epps will return as host for the fourth straight year,” the Associated Press said.

No performers have been announced yet for this year’s show, but it sounds like Kanye West would be a good choice.

Hip-hop manager Chris Lighty, a friend of many attending, committed suicide earlier in September, and will be honored at the ceremony. Lighty managed such names as Mariah Carey, Sean “Diddy” Combs, and 50 Cent.
