David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson have known each other for two decades. Now that they both now find themselves single, is it the right time for them to finally get together?

For a lot of fans of the 1990’s series The X-Files, all they ever wanted was for the show’s two characters, Fox Mulder and Dana Scully, to get together.

Those fans may now may have their wish. Sort of.

Tuesday, Gillian Anderson, who played Scully on the show, announced the break-up between her and her partner Mark Griffiths. The couple had been together since 2006 and have two children together.

The split comes on top of an odd interview with the Sunday Times Magazine. When asked if she was dating anyone, she had an interesting answer. “Um… yes… umm… umm… ” she replied, according to The Huffington Post.

Because of the timing of the break-up and interview, the rumors have been that Anderson has been dating her X-Files co-star David Duchovny, who himself split with his wife Tea Leoni (again) in 2011.

“Sources allegedly told Celebrity Dirty Laundry that Anderson and Duchovny have been in a serious relationship for some time,” said The Huffington Post, “and the 44-year-old actress has even moved her two children in with the 52-year-old Californication star.”

Duchovny was married to Leoni in 1997 and the couple had two children. In 2011, after multiple rumors of a split, the couple divorced, this time for good.

Today, the internet went wild with the rumors of Anderson and Duchovny’s possible romance.

“First Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis, now David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson?! I NEED AN IMMEDIATE UPDATE ON COURTNEY COX AND MATTHEW PERRY,” said a fan on Twitter, according to

But Duchovny’s publicist cleared up the rumors this afternoon through The rep said the rumors are not true, but that the two have stayed good friends over the years.

For X-Files fans who want to believe the rumors, it would be easy to remember all the couples that have denied their romances before they finally admitted to the truth.

And if anyone is good at believing in things they can’t see, it’s definitely X-Files fans.

The show first premiered almost 20 years ago and ran for nine seasons on TV, as well as releasing two movies.
