Lana Del Rey sings a song about Courtney Love’s vagina

Del Rey sang a cover at a show last week. What she didn’t realize is the writer’s widow would find out about it.

Courtney Love

Last week, Lana del Rey decided to (innocently) cover a version of Nirvana’s “Heart-Shaped Box” at her Sydney concert.

But the singer had no idea what she was getting herself into.

Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain’s wife Courtney Love decided to tweet about the cover.

“You do know the song is about my Vagina right?” said Love, according to NME. “‘Throw down your umbilical noose so I can climb right back,’ Umm On top of which some of the lyrics about my vagina I contributed. So umm next time you sing it, think about my vagina will you?”

Love has been known to be, um, protective of Cobain’s songs, to put it lightly. Earlier this year, she complained about one of his song’s being included in a Muppet movie.

“In March, she said a version of Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” covered in The Muppets had ‘raped’ Cobain’s legacy, (Cobain’s Nirvana bandmates had given their blessings for the song’s inclusion in the film)” said the Hollywood Reporter.

The tweet that Love sent out has since been deleted, but the Hole frontwoman didn’t seem to actually be offended by the cover. She later tweeted another message to the singer.

“You are gorgeous and very talented, it was all in good humor love, it is true however bwahaa xc,” said Love, according to the Huffington Post.

Del Rey said she has long been a fan of Cobain’s music and it helped her through her youth.

“When I was 11, I saw Kurt Cobain singing ‘Heart-Shaped Box’ on MTV and it really stopped me dead in my tracks,” she told a radio station earlier this year. “I thought he was the most beautiful person I had ever seen. Even at a young age, I really related to his sadness.”

Del Rey has not responded to the comments, or commented on whether she will be singing the song at future shows. You can guarantee, though, if she does, she will never think of it in the same way.
