Dane Cook received backlash after making a joke about the Batman movie and the shooting in Aurora.
Dane Cook’s Dark Knight Rises comedy bit is hard for the general public to stomach. Just one week after 12 people lost their lives and 58 were injured after James Holmes went on a shooting rampage, most — but not all — find nothing to laugh about.
“So I heard that the guy came into the theater about 25 minutes into the movie… And I don’t know if you’ve seen the movie, but the movie is pretty much a piece of crap,” Dane Cook joked about The Dark Knight Rises during a comedy performance Thursday. “Yeah, spoiler alert.”
From there, it just gets worse…
Dane Cook continued, “I know that if none of that would have happened, pretty sure that somebody in that theater, about 25 minutes in, realizing it was a piece of crap, was probably like ‘ugh f******g shoot me.'”
TMZ reports a bunch of people in the crowd laughed, though groans could also be heard coming from the audience.
As word of Dane Cook’s twisted Dark Knight humor spreads, Twitter users are reacting passionately. One wrote Friday, “Anyone who knows me, knows I think Dane Cook is the single worst comedian ever. He’s NEVER been funny. Now, he’s just an awful human being.”
Another showed disgust for his humor stylings by tweeting, “What’s worse than a Dane Cook joke? Dane Cook.”
A few out there in the Twitterverse are defending the comedian, though, noting that flexing free speech and bulldozing boundaries are staples of most humorists. “Now @danecook in trouble for joke he said in Comedy Club,” wrote one of the few on Dane Cook’s side. “If u are offended by ANYTHING AT ALL stay home n watch Touched By An Angel Reruns!
Still, one Twitter user thinks it’s our fault for not wising up to Dane Cook’s ways sooner. “Oh, Dane Cook is a huge douche missile?” @Johnny_UT wrote. “I can’t believe it took you all this long to figure it out.”
