I went to Cannes with Bill Murray
SheKnows brings you this exclusive Q&A with Moonrise Kingdom star Jared Gilman about his amazing trip to Cannes where he hung out with acting greats Bill Murray and Bruce Willis.
Getting cast in your first movie is a big deal for any young actor. But when it’s alongside names like Bill Murray, Ed Norton, Bruce Willis and Tilda Swinton, that’s something to write home about. Young co-star Jared Gilman, who plays Sam in the new feature film Moonrise Kingdom, gave SheKnows a personal account, along with his own photos of his trip to Cannes to debut the film.
Moonrise Kingdom is about two kids who fall in love and decide to run away together. When their parents, teachers and community go looking, they end up discovering more than just the whereabouts of the lost children.
All done in the colorful backdrop of director Wes Anderson’s world, this film is as heartwarming as Jared’s trip to Cannes.
SheKnows sat down with the young actor to hear about what it’s like to hang with Bill Murray and share laughs with Jason Schwartzman, all in the south of France.
SheKnows: Describe what it was like to be in Cannes for the first time?
Jared Gilman: It was too great for words. I had just felt so honored to be there. It’s very rare for an actor to have his first movie be the opening film for one of the most prestigious film festivals in the world like Cannes, so it was surreal.
SheKnows: What’s the coolest thing that happened to you there?
Jared Gilman: The coolest thing was just the fact that I finally got to see the finished version of the movie in front of an audience. But I have to say, that five-minute standing ovation was pretty cool, too.
SheKnows: Who did you travel with?
Jared Gilman: I traveled with my mom and my dad.
SheKnows: What was it like to be in a movie with such film legends like Bruce Willis and Harvey Keitel?
Jared Gilman: It was amazing to have the privilege to work with such great actors in such a great movie.
SheKnows: What’s your favorite Bill Murray movie?
Jared Gilman: It’s hard to pick a favorite because they're all so funny, but I guess it would have to be Ghostbusters. It’s my first film that I saw starring Bill Murray, so it’s a sentimental favorite of mine.
SheKnows: What is your favorite Wes Anderson movie?
Jared Gilman: My favorite Wes Anderson movie besides this would have to be a tie between Rushmore and The Darjeeling Limited.
SheKnows: What is the one piece of advice that Wes Anderson gave you that sticks most?
Jared Gilman: The one piece of advice that sticks with me is that Wes asked me to act natural during a lot of the scenes because it helped with my performance.
SheKnows: Who is your acting idol and why?
Jared Gilman: I’m a huge movie buff so I have many actors that I look up to. But I guess it would probably be Leonardo DiCaprio because of his skill for being able to pick such great movies to be in and how he is extremely consistent with his roles.
SheKnows: What’s your favorite movie and why?
Jared Gilman: This is a really tough question for me. I’m a huge movie buff and I see so many movies that are all so different that I never really have a specific favorite movie. However, I did just recently see this movie called Moon with Sam Rockwell, and I thought it was really well-made, and the twists were great and the special effects were really good considering the shoestring budget that it had.
