Debut author Erin Duffy talks Bond Girl
IT girl author Erin Duffy chats with SheKnows about her debut novel Bond Girl -- that has everyone buzzing.
SheKnows: Tell us about Bond Girl. What are three things we should know?
It's funny! It's not about finance as much as it's about the psychology of the crazy people who choose to do this job.
Secondly, it's fiction! It's not an autobiography by any means.
And lastly, it's fiction. Really, I mean it.
SheKnows: Describe the area where you write. And what are five things on your desk?
Erin Duffy: Let's see.
A pathetically weak lamp
A notebook covered with nonsensical thoughts
A dozen pens, half of which work
And post-it notes stuck to every dry surface in reach
SheKnows: This is your debut novel and it's been getting rave reviews -- even landing on the Entertainment Weekly "The Must List." What have been the best, worst and most surprising things about having your first book published?
Erin Duffy: The reviews have been amazing. I'm still shocked people have received it so well. The best thing about being published is being published! It was amazing to see the book on shelves; I can't believe it's actually out there for anyone to buy. The worst thing is reading some of the reviews that haven't been so nice, but that's all part of the process. Not everyone is going to like it, but it's still not fun to read the nasty ones! The most surprising thing to me has been how much people really seem to enjoy the characters. I think right now it's not easy for people to like people on Wall Street. The fact that they do makes me really happy.
SheKnows: What is something people would be surprised to know about you?
Erin Duffy: I like to cook! I find it therapeutic for some reason. Plus, it's a good way to make sure you're friends keep coming over to hang out.
SheKnows: You've said that although your book, Bond Girl, is fiction, it's also based on your own experiences. Did the words just fly out of you easily or was it a labor of love or a little bit of both?
Erin Duffy: A little of both. The story is definitely fiction, but I drew on some of my own experiences. It was fun to tell some of my stories but at the same time it was difficult because I didn't want people to think they were reading my diary.
SheKnows: What are you reading right now? What's the next book you plan to read?
Erin Duffy: Right now I'm reading Marisa de Los Santos's new novel, Falling Together. When I'm finished with that, I want to read the Wicked series by Gregory Maguire. I loved the play so I'm really looking forward to reading the books.
SheKnows: Are you working on another book? If so, can you give us any hints?
Erin Duffy: I am! It's not a sequel; it has all new characters! It takes place at the beach and it will include elements about social media and how it has changed the way people date. It's still in the early stages, but so far I'm having a lot of fun with it.
