The costliest mistake of Katy Perry and Russell Brand’s 14-month marriage was made before they even walked down the aisle: The exes did not sign a prenuptial agreement. The busty beauty could lose millions in her pending divorce from the British funnyman.
The whirlwind courtship and subsequent engagement of British comedian Russell Brand and singing superstar Katy Perry has ended almost as quickly as it began, but the brief marriage could be a pain in the pop star’s pocketbook for years to come.
That tends to happen when couples walk down the aisle without protecting their personal assets with a prenuptial agreement.
“Really, love between two people is the most spectacular and ordinary thing in the world… I want to make our wedding just about me and her loving each other and we’re getting married in front of our friends and family and keeping it normal,” Brand told New York magazine a few days before his wedding in October 2010.
“So it ain’t selling the pictures, ain’t doing no prenup. (But) it’s like a normal thing. It’s hard to make it normal because there’s this inflation of this toxic gas of celebrity billowing into it.”
Now, the professional prankster, 36, could be laughing all the way to the bank. Brand stands to make off with an estimated $30 million from the 27-year-old sex symbol’s fortune.
As the couple never signed a prenuptial agreement, the former heroin addict could be entitled to half the 27-year-old brunette babe’s millions under California’s community property law. The state’s community property clause demands a 50/50 split of marital assets in cases of divorce where there is not a prenup already in place.
Perry is estimated to be worth over $44 million, according to Forbes magazine. The card-carrying “California Gurl” was featured on the financial publication’s 2011 list of the Top-Earning Women in Music. The “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F)” hit-maker’s checking account may have grown to nearly $70 million following her successful 133-day “California Dreams” tour, her platinum-selling Teenage Dream LP and a new Katy Perry doll manufactured by Barbie-makers Mattel.
Brand is said to boast a net worth closer to $17 million.
The lovin’ twosome walked down the aisle on Oct. 23, 2010, as part of a lavish ceremony that swept Jaipur, India for almost a week. The couple, who announced their breakup on Friday, sparked split rumors when they spent Christmas holiday on different continents without their wedding rings.
