Tom Cruise can't let Top Gun go
Tom Cruise is itching to reprise his role as a high-flying Naval officer in Top Gun 2. The Mission Impossible star has revealed his desire to revisit one of the biggest films of his career. Once again, he's ready to step into the "Danger Zone."
Tom Cruise has sequel fever and his eyes are on 1986's Top Gun. While promoting his latest film Mission Impossible Ghost Protocol (another sequel), he opened up about his desire to reprise his iconic role as Pete "Maverick" Mitchell in Top Gun 2.
The original Top Gun was directed by Tony Scott and produced by Jerry Bruckheimer. It centered on a hot shot aviator and his adventures at an elite flying school for fighter pilots. The movie earned over $176 million domestically and $354 million worldwide. With a gross like that, who wouldn't want to go for a second spin?
When asked about the rumored production of Top Gun 2, Cruise told MTV, "We're working on it." He continued, "I said to Tony I want to make another movie with him. He and I haven't made a film since Days of Thunder. Tony and I and Jerry, we never thought that we would do it again. Then they started to come to us with these ideas of where it is now. I thought, 'Wow, that would be ...what we could do now.'"
For Cruise to return to the cockpit, the sequel has to have the same edge as the original. He said, "If we can find a story that we all want to do, we all want to make a film that is in the same kind of tone as the other one and shoot it in the same way as we shot Top Gun."
While waiting for Cruise and company to pool their ideas, you can catch the first Top Gun in early 2012, when it's re-released in 3D. Please enjoy Maverick, Goose, Iceman and more in three beautiful dimensions.
