Country singer Mindy McCready is missing — and so is her young son. What happened in court to make her flee?
Troubled country singer Mindy McCready is missing after fleeing with her son in the midst of a court dispute.
McCready, who has visitation rights but not custody of her five-year-old son Zander, disappeared with the boy after picking him up from her father’s house in Florida. Her parents have custody.
The singer has been fighting to keep her little boy after a long history of domestic violence and drug and alcohol abuse. In 2005, her future baby daddy Billy McKnight was arrested on charges of attempted murder after she accused him of beating and choking her. She was found unconscious later that summer after a suicide attempt by overdose; she tried again a few months later while she was pregnant with Zander.
McCready made another attempt on her life in 2008, when Zander was two and a half years old, by slicing her wrists. She was hospitalized in 2010 for a possible overdose after appearing on the third season of Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew.
In addition, the singer has a string of drug and alcohol-related arrests reaching back to 2005.
McCready posted a message on her Facebook page Tuesday night saying, “I have been fighting the Florida court system to protect my son and bring him home. Please do not worry.”
“My son is not missing. Police established that this afternoon via Skype,” she wrote on her wall.
A judge has ordered McCready to return her son to her parents by 5 p.m. on Thursday.
