Zooey Deschanel and Ben Gibbard are pictured here in happier times, attending the BAFTA Brits to Watch Gala this past July. Us Weekly reports news of the couple’s divorce, confirmed by the New Girl star’s rep.
“It was mutual and amicable,” an unnamed source commented. Before the rumor-mill could even get wound up about affairs or new love interests, they added, “There was no third party involved.”
It was only in Sep. of 2009 that Zooey Deschanel exchanged vows with the front man for Death Cab for Cutie. The 31-year-old actress commented previously it was “definitely hard” to be apart as required by their mutually busy schedules. “You can’t expect to make no effort,” she said of marriage. “You still have to make the effort and be kind and understanding. It sort of just solidifies your commitment.”
Of first setting eyes on his future (ex) wife Ben Gibbard said, “I’d seen her movies and obviously I thought she was very beautiful.” The pair later met through the manager of both her band, She & Him, and his.
“I was just awestruck that she was even talking to me,” said the 35-year-old alternative rocker, who later proposed with a three-carat diamond and platinum Neil Lane ring.
Recently the pair became aunt and uncle, when Zooey’s sister Emily Deschanel gave birth. The Bones actress gave birth to son Henry Hornsby on Sep. 21.
Perhaps leading to Zooey Deschanel and Ben Gibbard’s decision to split was their busy work schedules over the past year. Death Cab for Cutie dropped their seventh studio album Codes and Keys, in the spring, while she was hard at work creating the hit show New Girl.
