In 1987, Rob Reiner directed an unconventional fairytale called The Princess Bride. The film wasn’t a massive box office hit but it earned a cult following on home video. It’s been almost 25 years since the movie’s release and the cast has reunited for a very special occasion.
The cast of The Princess Bride, which includes Cary Elwes, Robin Wright, Billy Crystal, Chris Sarandon, Carol Kane and Wallace Shawn all appear in the current reunion issue of Entertainment Weekly. During the magazine shoot, everyone took a moment to speak with ABC’s Good Morning America to reflect on the film.
Aside from its talented actors, The Princess Bride is mostly remembered for its hilarious quotes and one-liners. Elwes’ character Westley is best known for his catchphrase “As you wish,” a line the actor believes will follow him to the grave. “I think when I die, they’ll say on my gravestone, ‘As you wish.’ Every woman wants to hear that,” said Elwes.
Another notable piece of dialogue came from Mandy Patinkin’s character Inigo Montoya, who famously said, “Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die.”
On the surface, The Princess Bride was a comedy but at its core it was a love story between the beautiful Buttercup (Wright) and Westley (Elwes), her handsome hero. When it came to the film’s climactic kiss scene, Wright admitted that she enjoyed shooting it for her own selfish reasons. The actress revealed that during the filming she kept wondering, “Can they see my heart beating so fast because he’s so cute. Westley’s so cute.”
