Actor Jim Sturgess reveals how fashion helped him channel his character in his new film, One Day.
We all have that one person — a friend, an ex — that sticks with us throughout the years. Timing and other circumstances might keep you apart, but for whatever reason you keep coming back to that person.
One Day — the new film starring Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess — follows that type of relationship through twenty years. Their characters, working-class Emma Morley and privileged Dexter Mayhew, begin a friendship on their college graduation day: July 15, 1988.
The story follows them through key moments over twenty years worth of July 15’s — the day they met. “Together and apart, we see Dex and Em through their friendship and fights, hopes and missed opportunities, laughter and tears,” Focus Features told SheKnows. “Somewhere along their journey, these two people realize that what they are searching and hoping for has been there for them all along. As the true meaning of that one day back in 1988 is revealed, they come to terms with the nature of love and life itself.”
Sounds like just the type of love-gone-wrong-yet-so-right story we can get behind!
Sturgess revealed exclusively to SheKnows that he was able to get in Dexter’s mindset thanks to the various fashions of the era.
“Well I can tell where Dexter is in his life based on the haircut he’s got,” he said. “As soon as you put on that sort of skin of him that day you sort of know where you are in the story. Depending on the size of shoulder pads in the suit, I know where Dexter is in his head.”
However, the story shows that the clothes don’t always make the man — there is always more happening on the inside.
