Girl power! Maria Sharapova & Danica Patrick highest-paid female athletes
Tennis star Maria Sharapova and IndyCar driver Danica Patrick are two of the highest-paid female athletes, according to Forbes. Cha-ching!
We're used to hearing about Tiger Woods and those overpaid NFL stars earning millions for their work, but what about the ladies? Sadly, few women make it to the top earners list -- except racecar driver Danica Patrick and tennis star Maria Sharapova.
Sharapova and Patrick are the highest and third-highest paid female athletes, respectively, according to Forbes.com. Sharapova earned $25 million over the past 12 months, while Patrick made just half of that: $12 million.
Heck, we'd take just a million of their earnings and be totally happy.
Despite all of her cash, Sharapova said she's not planning an over-the-top celebration for her upcoming wedding to Sasha Vujacic.
"I watched the royal wedding, and I thought it was so grand, with all those millions of people around the world taking an interest in those two people, and I loved Kate's dress," Sharapova told the UK Daily Telegraph in June.
"But I wasn't watching it to get any tips for my wedding. I don't think I'm going to be getting married in an abbey. It's going to be a lot smaller, and I put the emphasis on a lot."
As for Patrick? She doesn't really talk about money. However she's likely to continue rolling in the dough for a long time, thanks to her marketable status and looks.
"In the eyes of brand decision-makers, she was a personality who happened to be a very good race car driver," said sports consultant Dan Migala. "Now she can be marketed as an athlete. She has the label of racing champion."
