After months of speculation, an admission by her own father-in-law and an obviously growing baby bump, France's first lady Carla Bruni Sarkozy has officially confirmed she is pregnant.

Due in the fall, Bruni has been keeping her pregnancy quiet for months -- and she still will not reveal if her baby is a boy or a girl.

"There are some things that one has to keep secret," she told French regional daily Nice Matin.

Why all the secrecy? "First in order to protect myself, to avoid having to expose my personal life. It's a great joy for me, but one that is fairly banal after all," Bruni said.

"People have other problems and it would be out of place to talk about it too much," she added.

Carla Bruni has a 10-year-old son Aurélien by former lover Raphael Enthoven. She married French President Nicolas Sarkozy in 2008. This will be his fourth child.
