Supermodel Petra Nemcova trades her dancing shoes for a hammer
Supermodel Petra Nemcova unveils her latest creation: A new school for children in Haiti.
Dancing With the Stars alum Petra Nemcova has a heart of gold -- and she's continuing to make good on her promise to help others. The gorgeous Nemcova just opened the "Ecole Nouvelle Zoranje" with her Happy Hearts Foundation with help from Foundation ProDev.
"This school demonstrates that Haiti has the capacity supported by strategic partnerships to develop and to bring opportunities, innovation and quality education to its children. It is so exciting to see these bright children to be empowered," Nemcova told PopEater after the school's opening.
Nemcova, 31, started the Happy Hearts Fund after she survived the 2004 tsunami that hit while she was vacationing in Thailand. Her fiancé, Simon Atlee, was swept to sea, but Nemcova clung to a palm tree for eight hours with a broken pelvis and internal injuries before she was rescued.
Nemcova heard the screams of children while she was trying to survive.
"I was not able to help those children," Nemcova told ABC News. "You heard them screaming for help and after some time you couldn't hear their voices anymore."
Since then, the Happy Hearts Fund has created schools in Thailand, as well as helped with relief after an earthquake struck Peru.
That's not all she's happy about these days -- Nemcova just got engaged to British actor Jamie Belman in January.
"Petra and Jamie are delighted to announce their engagement after a whirlwind eight-month romance," her rep told People in January.
