Thor tops box office weekend

Thor brought down the hammer on this week’s box office competition, bringing in an estimated debut of $66 million.

According to Box Office MojoThor’s mighty box office opening of $66 million puts the Chris Hemsworth and Natalie Portman flick at the top of the box office this week! Thor also starred Anthony Hopkins, which puts two Oscar winners at the forefront of a superhero film — that’s a total recipe for success!

Fast Five sped into a record-breaking spot last week, but managed to slip into the number two spot with $32.5 million this week. The film’s two week gross total is a whopping $140 million.

Jumping the Broom went head-to-head with Something Borrowed, just barely taking the number three spot at $13.7 million, while the Kate Hudson rom-com took in $13.2 million.

Who isn’t excited we’re still talking about Rio? The animated film took the fifth spot with $8.2 million. That puts Rio’s gross total at $114.9 million.

Robert Pattinson and Reese Witherspoon’s film Water for Elephants came in at number six with $5.6 million, while Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Big Happy Family ranked number seven with $3.9 million.

Prom danced to the tune of the eighth spot with $2.4 million and Soul Surfer and Hoodwinked Too rounded out the top 10 with $2.1 million and $1.8 million.
