The one and only Cher couldn't be more proud of her son Chaz. After a screening of the upcoming documentary Becoming Chaz, the 64-year-old and the rest of the audience got to their feet for a standing ovation.

Chaz Bono

Chaz Bono, who has legally transitioned from female to male, was once a little girl named Chastity. The child of Cher and Sonny Bono says he now feels like a "complete person" after undergoing a sex-change operation.

"I've hated my body since puberty," reveals Chaz. "When I was a little girl, I would go to sleep at night praying I'd wake up as a boy. I just knew I wanted to be a boy."

Chaz's journey from female to male will be broadcast on Oprah's OWN network next week in a documentary called Becoming Chaz. After a screening of her son's film, Cher said proudly, "I admire my son Chaz's courage for sharing his personal journey. Most important to me is that he is very happy. That's what I care about the most. He has my love and support."

Chaz, who came out as a lesbian at age 18, now lives in Los Angeles with Jennifer Ella, his girlfriend of five years. As for the motivation to put his personal life on screen he explains, "I wanted to do this because I wanted to help people. And I knew that I could put a face on this issue that people just don't understand because it's a hard one to understand. I wanted to be able to change people's hearts and minds on this."
