The Vampire Diaries recap: Crying Wolf

Feb 11, 2011 at 12:51 p.m. ET

The Vampire Diaries' Crying Wolf episode found a romantic getaway planned for Elena Gilbert and Stefan Salvatore that included intruding werewolves and wooden bullets. Don't believe us? Check out what went down on this week's episode of The Vampire Diaries.

This week's episode of The Vampire Diaries left a lot of broken hearts on the floor -- but it wasn't the human kind. The pesky werewolves of Mystic Falls once again tried to stick their muzzles in the vampires' business -- vampire business being Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Elena's (Nina Dobrev) private getaway and Elijah's secret plan -- which made for two very angry nightwalkers.

The wolves descend -- again

Nina and Paul on The Vampire Diaries

There were so many hearts ripped out in this episode -- all werewolves, of course -- it was hard to keep track. It all started with Elena and Stefan's trip to the Gilbert lake house. While the two cozied up in the cabin, Damon (Ian Somerhalder) got a lesson in respecting his elders from Elijah at a social tea. Caroline (Candice Accola) got back into the mix, helping Bonnie (Katerina Graham) and Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) trick Luka into telling them what Jonas and Elijah were really up to.

On the werewolves' side of the field, Jules and Brady found out Elena was the doppelganger and enlisted Tyler's (Michael Trevino) help in securing two things: the moonstone and Elena Gilbert. Only problem is, they didn't tell Tyler what happens to the doppelganger -- you know, the whole sacrifice thing. Brady and Tyler set out to nab Elena from the lake house while Jules and a few of her pack members, including the very new and cool Stevie, went to pay Damon a visit to retrieve the moonstone.

The Vampire Diaries: Crying Wolf -- heart?

Jules managed to "kill" Alaric just as he was leaving the Salvatore boarding house. A surprised Damon was taken hostage. No one hooks Damon Salvatore up to a wooden torture device and gets away with it. Jules found that out sure enough.

Caroline, Bonnie and Jeremy found out through drugging Luka that he and his father were helping Elijah in order to get Luka's sister back (she's Klaus' witch slave). They intend to weaken Klaus. This won't happen, however, until after the sacrifice -- as in Elena will die when Elijah is ready.

At the cabin, Brady and Tyler interrupted Stefan and Elena's getaway by shooting the younger Salvatore brother with some nifty wooden bullets. Elena's no pushover, she played a good game of cat and mouse with Brady, but it wasn't necessary. Tyler came to his senses and helped Stefan after finding out the wolves lied about Elena being safe. This commences the first of many hearts being lost in Crying Wolf. Stefan reached in and pulled the heart right from Brady's chest. Tyler begged for Elena's forgiveness, claiming he had no idea the plan was to sacrifice her -- he just doesn't want to be like this anymore. All is forgiven -- or is it?

Damon had a bit more trouble in his torture chamber. Jules was persistent in getting the moonstone but he refused to talk -- taking in all the pain Stevie was dishing out. Just in the nick of time, Elijah rode in on his vampire white horse and the next heart wrenching episode took place. With his bare hands, Elijah voided Jules' pack of their hearts -- minus one of them, we think Stevie was beheaded. It was kind of hard to tell with all the bloodshed. Jules managed to escape.

The Vampire Diaries: Crying Wolf -- truth revealed

With Bonnie, Caroline and Jeremy informed of Elijah and Jonas' intent to eventually sacrifice Elena, it was time for Stefan to learn the truth. He realized that Elena's deal with Elijah was only to keep her family and friends safe -- it never included protecting Elena forever. Stefan also came to the realization that Elena knew this the whole time. He accused her of being a martyr and not a hero.

Tyler left Mystic Falls with Jules when all was said and done, but not before giving Matt some friendly advice -- be good to Caroline.

On next week's episode of The Vampire Diaries, fans get to see a brutal side of Stefan's past that he's kept hidden.
