Barbara Walters has been known to unveil interesting choices on her annual 10 Most Fascinating People list, especially when it comes to the number one spot and 2010 is no different.
Perhaps General David Petraeus is considered an unconventional choice for the number one spot because he doesn’t stand in the Hollywood limelight or have a standing date with the tabloids, but isn’t that what makes him fascinating?
General David Petraeus: Most Fascinating Person 2010
Barbara Walters chose General David Petraeus as the most fascinating person of 2010 because he’s “an American hero.” The humble Petraeus probably doesn’t give making a 10 Most Fascinating People list a second thought, let alone topping it, while he’s advocating change in Afghanistan and that’s what makes him perfect.
General David Petraeus is the top commander in Afghanistan and Walters paid tribute to his efforts and amazing resilience. “In life, it seems, there are people who break things and people who fix them. This man is a fixer,” Barbara Walters said on her special, 10 Most Fascinating People of 2010. “A lot depends on General Petraeus and his combination of humanity and strength.”
Petraeus was chosen by President Barack Obama in June to take the reigns from General Stanley McChrystal as the top commander in Afghanistan. The general was chosen based on his previous efforts to decrease violence with the Multi-National Force-Iraq in 2006.

David Petraeus was in good company, sharing the 10 Most Fascinating People of 2010 list with some of Hollywood and Washington’s most famous personalities including the Jersey Shore cast, music sensation Justin Bieber, Sarah Palin, Jennifer Lopez, the great Betty White and Kate Middleton.
Barbara Walters has made her 10 Most Fascinating People special an 18-season staple, choosing some of the most truly fascinating people and outlining just how special they are to the world and their craft. In 2009, first lady Michelle Obama was Walters’ number one most fascinating person and in 2008, it was President-elect Barack Obama. Other past list toppers include J.K. Rowling, Paris Hilton, Laura Bush and Nelson Mandela. Quite the group, isn’t it?
