Johnny Depp hopes to woo Angelina Jolie in The Tourist, but instead lands himself in a mess of trouble. Depp, Jolie and Brad Pitt hit New York for the premiere of The Tourist Monday and a star-studded crowd turned out to see what this thriller is all about.

It was fandemonium at the Ziegfeld Theater for the December 6 premiere of The Tourist. Stars Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp were on hand, along with Jolie's escort Brad Pitt, Paul Bettany and wife Jennifer Connelly, Brooke Shields, Gabourey Sidibe, Ashanti, Warren Beatty, Alessandra Ambrosio, Tinsley Mortimer, Rufus Sewell, Angie Everhart and designer Betsey Johnson -- not to mention a host of fans who turned out to see them.

After a year of filming with Jolie and Depp, The Tourist director Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck is used to that kind of attention. "We had about 30,000 [people] standing behind the barricades whenever we tried to do an intimate scene, so it was quite adventurous," Henckel von Donnersmarck shared with MTV.

"There's a reason why we're all so fascinated with these people. Johnny is as funny and as cool as he is onscreen in real life. I'd say there's very little difference. He's everybody's idol and Angelina's the same way. She's just so elegant and feminine and just exciting. It was quite an experience working with them."

While Johnny Depp is as A-list as his gorgeous costar, he's made a life outside of the Hollywood hustle and was unimpressed with the tabloid obsession with Angelina Jolie.

"Poor thing, dogged by paparazzi, her and her husband, Brad…all their kids," Depp empathized to Vanity Fair. "There are times when you see how ridiculous is this life, how ludicrous it is, you know, leaving your house every morning and being followed by paparazzi."

With constant "news" of Jolie/Pitt feuds and affairs, Depp said working with Jolie meant "sometimes not even being able to talk to each other in public, because someone will take a photograph and it will be misconstrued and turned into some other [expletive]."

With two of Hollywood's hottest stars coming together in the romantic streets of Venice, Italy and Paris, France, The Tourist has been making news since Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie were cast in the remake of the 2005 French thriller Anthony Zimmer.

For all the buzz, however, we haven't actually heard much about what The Tourist is actually about. SheKnows has the story.

The Tourist preview

In The Tourist, Depp plays Frank, a broken-hearted American who runs to Italy for a bit of healing. Instead, he comes across an astonishing woman (Jolie) who lures him into a world of international criminals and lawmen.

While Tourist Frank tries to romance Elise, she's actually using him to throw off the gangster (Steven Berkoff) and the agent (Bettany) who are on the hunt for her thieving ex-lover. In addition to being wanted in fourteen countries, it turns out Elise's ex also stole money from the wrong guy.

Thanks to Elise, a case of mistaken identity sends Frank on the run. The Tourist gets much more than he bargained for from the gorgeous lady he meets on a train, but so too will scheming Elise.

"Imagine a woman who is just so elegant, sophisticated and educated and has lived in that world and now, through a whole set of circumstances, suddenly falls in love with a guy who is not any of those things," Henckel von Donnersmarck previewed. "It just somehow confuses her whole world because that was not meant to happen. She had it all worked out, she had this grand master plan, and neither he nor she had thought it possible that they would fall in love with each other."

Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie's The Tourist hits theaters this Friday, December 10.
