Charlie St Cloud star offers Zac Efron insight
Charlie St Cloud is Zac Efron’s movie sure, but any actor will tell you, any performance worth its salt arose from a partnership with another actor. In Charlie St Cloud, the other actor to Zac Efron and his starring turn is ironically also named Charlie -- Charlie Tahan.
The pride of New Jersey, Tahan scored the prize role as Charlie St Cloud's (Zac Efron) little brother after conquering the maze of national auditions.
We sit down with the heart of Charlie St Cloudfor a little insight into the persona of Zac Efron and whether any of those New Jersey-based reality shows such as Jersey Shore, in fact get it right.
Zoning in with Zac
SheKnows: What was it like working with Zac?
Charlie Tahan: We actually did a lot of pranks on each other. There was lots of joking, things like that [laughs].
SheKnows: He is obviously quite the movie star. Did you sense that from the get-go or did you feel he came out as just a regular guy?
Charlie Tahan: I can picture people thinking he's all Hollywood. He's not that at all.
SheKnows: What appealed to you first about being a part of Charlie St Cloud?
Charlie Tahan: I thought the relationship between the brothers was really nice.
SheKnows: Do you yourself have a brother.
Charlie Tahan: Yeah, I have a brother.
SheKnows: Did you bring any of that to the role in Charlie St Cloud? You do have that brotherly experience.
Charlie Tahan: Yeah, we play music together, all the time. But, we don't play baseball [laughs].
SheKnows: [Laughs] Do you personally like the Red Sox? That was a big part of your character. Or was that a difficult thing to portray?
Charlie Tahan: I'm actually not really into sports.
SheKnows: Then was that aspect of your character, who wanted to be a professional baseball player, something you had to look a little more into?
Charlie Tahan: Not really no. I don't think so.
SheKnows: You're a young actor, what was it that first made you want to get into acting?
Charlie Tahan: I just wanted to do something acting over the summer when I was five and I have never stopped doing it [laughs].
Charlie St Cloud: Tahan talks
SheKnows: Where did you grow up?
Charlie Tahan: New Jersey
SheKnows: Did you go into New York for auditions or did you come out here to LA?
Charlie Tahan: It was New York. I always like going into New York.
SheKnows: What is the audition process like for you? Do you get nervous?
Charlie Tahan: I really like auditions. I really don't get nervous. I got nervous for maybe two auditions. I went to LA actually for this one and got it.
SheKnows: That moment, when you have gotten the role, how much of it is excitement and how much is nerves for what you now have to do?
Charlie Tahan: It is a little bit of both. But it is really something when you hear you got a role. Like for this movie, I was very thankful -- very thankful.
SheKnows: Was it hard to wrap your head around the idea of playing a kid that, well frankly, dies.
Charlie Tahan: I thought it would be. I'm playing a dead kid. But, I realized that I needed to act like I was alive. I'm just a normal kid playing catch with his brother. It's the story of those kids, that's all.
SheKnows: The story of Charlie St Cloudso resonates. You and Charlie are the children of a single mom. What would you like audiences to take away from the experience of watching Charlie St Cloud?
Charlie Tahan: Family, basically. How important it is to form that bond. I think it's a feel-good movie in the end.
SheKnows: It really is, the first scenes of the movie, you're on the sailboat sailing with Zac. Do you get seasick?
Charlie Tahan: No, I get plane sick. Sailing for me is not a tall order.
SheKnows: That looked like it was quite the challenge to film. Shooting anything on water, it has to be difficult.
Charlie Tahan: I thought it was going to be hard. They (the crew) are on a separate boat filming pretty far away. We had to train for the sailing part. It turns out it paid off! We got really attached to our sailboat, me and Zac [laughs]. We were always trying to outrun the other boaters. It was really funny [laughs].
SheKnows: Where was the film shot?
Charlie Tahan: Vancouver.
SheKnows: It was glorious, gorgeous…
Charlie Tahan: Yeah it was…
SheKnows: What was it like to be there?
Charlie Tahan: There is so much to do there from the water to the mountains. It is the perfect land.
SheKnows: Filming a movie that is so heartwarming, were your parents particularly proud of you to be a part of it?
Charlie Tahan: Yeah, totally. They have always told me I could be whatever I wanted to be.
SheKnows: What else is coming up for you?
Charlie Tahan: Nothing really. Actually, there are a few things.
SheKnows: Are you still living in New Jersey or did you move to LA?
Charlie Tahan: I still live in New Jersey.
SheKnows: What do you make of all the attention on your state because of Jersey Shore?
Charlie Tahan: There's a lot of reality shows about it right now. Everybody on reality TV gets Jersey wrong. Different parts of New Jersey are totally different than other parts.
