Kris Allen wins American Idol
The favorites in this year's biggest reality series both lost. American Idol crowned Kris Allen its champion while Shawn Johnson took the Dancing with the Stars title.
Kris Allen is a fantastic singer and proved his mettle on the final two shows of American Idol, but especially in its final weeks. Adam Lambert was the favorite from early on, and through everyone we spoke with, seemed a lock to win.
Obviously we know what happened. The confetti and white sparkling lights fell on Kris singing No Boundaries and not Adam. It immediately makes us think about Dancing with the Stars and its finale that had a similar outcome.
Gilles and Cheryl were the odds-on favorite to hoist the Mirror Ball Trophy for Dancing with the Stars. Instead, it was Shawn and Mark's names that were read as winning the 2009 season.
Two of America's biggest shows and both end the same way -- it begs a question.
How did this happen?
Read here for our American Idol columnist's take on the entire upset.
Has American Idol heard a voice like Lambert's prior to his gracing the American Idol stage? No.
As far as Dancing with the Stars goes, Gilles and Cheryl were by far the best couple and they too finished as the also-ran.
The Adam Lambert in the Dancing with the Stars equation is Gilles. Both were robbed!
Allen and Johnson were both excelling at the right time and both had the teenage girl vote, which is never to be underestimated — just ask The Jonas Brothers, the movies Titanic and Twilight.
Yet the outcome is still puzzling.
Idol final faults
When Lambert sang with Kiss, it seemed to all make sense. Yes, Keith Urban is fabulous, but his pairing with Kris Allen seemed ill-timed even if both singers pulled off the feat.
Lambert, on the other hand, emerging singing the Kiss classic Beth allowed audiences to have their light bulbs go off. "He's performing with Kiss!" There have been few performances on the LA Live stage that got a crowd into a frenzy as the Kiss and Adam Lambert jam of Rock n' Roll All Night accomplished. Showman is clearly too calm of a word to describe Adam's talents. It is, and always will be, difficult to upstage Kiss. Lambert succeeded on that front!
So where did it go wrong for the Lambert fans?
The answer is the same place Gilles and Cheryl fans are seeking answers from their Dancing with the Stars upset.
With Gilles and Cheryl leading the pack, Dancing with the Stars had itself an upset that was self-created.
By having Gilles achieve such high scores as the competition began, the bar of expectations was so high, he had nowhere to go but down. For him to come back to the final after dipping out of first place was an accomplishment, but it also gave him the favorite title -- a moniker that was deserved.
How did Shawn Johnson's name become the one read as the champion of Dancing with the Stars? Simple, it was close. Apparently it was within one-percentage point between the two dancing couples. That may be, but Gilles was a much better dancer than Shawn and should have won in a landslide.
Sure there's the Olympic medalist vote that will always put an Olympian at the top of the Dancing with the Stars leader-board. But, in this situation, it simply came down to a choice that was so close — either result was possible.
It does not make it any less of a shock.
American Idol on the other hand, where Dancing with the Stars was petty theft, Kris Allen winning Idol was grand larceny.
