The women of Watchmen proved their mettle as the film that appealed to fanboys and fangirls equally blew up the box office with the largest opening weekend of 2009.
Watchmen opened to an astonishing $55.7 million and Zach Snyder’s previous effort, 300, was thought to be filmmaker’s goal. 300 opened to $70.9 million during its March 2007 opening weekend.
In second place, Tyler Perry continued his box office rule as his Madea Goes To Jail added another $8.8 million to its till, bringing its total earnings to $67.7 in only three weeks. Liam Neeson was just behind in fourth as he is still surprising as an action hero. Taken took an addition $7.4 in its third week of release. The Oscar winner for Best Picture, Slumdog Millionaire, kept its amazing box office streak going with its fifth place, $6.9 million in a blessed 17-week run.
