Love Stinks! What else does pop music have to tell us about being single on Valentine’s Day?
10. Hot n’ Cold, Katy Perry
Who needs a love when that individual is as predictable as the weather? Katy Perry captured the sentiment of women everywhere when she declares:
You’re hot and you’re cold, you’re yes, then you’re no, you’re in then you’re out, you’re up and you’re down, you’re wrong when it’s right, you’re black when it’s white.
Rather than simply existing in a go no where relationship, as Perry suggests, get out because as everyone knows, going from Hot n’ Cold quickly will do nothing but make you sick.
9. Temped, Squeeze
Two ways to look at Squeeze’s Tempted. The first is the optimistic person who thrives on the attraction of others and the barriers of relationship prevent that. The second way is thanking the heavens you are single because who needs someone who is Tempted?
8. Blue Monday, Orgy
Yes, sometimes there is an anger aspect of being single and with lyrics from Blue Monday do not paint a pretty picture of the joys of relationship. Being treated horribly by someone who does not appreciate you, once again, should bring optimism because it is better to be single than be mistreated. Because of the edge on the Orgy recording of Blue Monday, they land on our countdown instead of New Order’s original.
7. Why Can’t I, Liz Phair
In a relationship you can’t. So as Liz Phair sings about the longing for another, know that by being single, this issue is a non-issue.
6. Beaituful, Christina Aguilera
You’re beautiful, no matter what they say.
You are the most beautiful person in the world, with or without someone by your side. Christina Aguilera nailed it in her ode to positive self awareness. It is easy to drift into letting one’s self esteem slip couples waltz by during this time of year. Listen to the God-given gift that is Aguilera’s voice as she extols the virtue of the wonder that is you. Crank it!
Cause we are beautiful no matter what they say. Yes, words won’t bring us down. No, no, no, we are beautiful in every single way. Yes, words can bring us down. Oh, no, so don’t you bring me down today. Don’t you bring me down today.
