Britney Spears set to open MTV Video Music Awards

Britney Spears is set to do it again. After an embarrassing performance at last year’s MTV Video Music Awards that left half the audience scratching their heads and the other half snickering, Britney Spears will once more kick off the annual show.

But it won’t be a performance, according to MTV President Van Toffler. Instead, watch for something “fun and unexpected” on Sunday night’s show.

“MTV has long played an important role in my career. How can I not be there to kick off their 25th VMAs? I’m excited to open the entire show, to say hi to my fans and to be nominated,” Spears says in a statement.

The singer has been nominated in the Best Female Video category for her Piece of Me clip, which cheekily makes fun of her plight as the world’s most sought-after photography subject.

Britney’s up against Mariah Carey, Katy Perry, Rihanna and Jordin Sparks.
