Each late July, as the days head into August, a swarm of sharks attack television. Shark Week has become a summer institution and it has returned to take another bite out of the competition.
When “Jaws” hit theaters 30 years ago, it launched the summer movie. The Discovery Channel had a similar effect on television when its “Shark Week” bowed in 2002.
The week that is all teeth has proved to be a ratings goldmine for the cable network. After repeated summers of proving to the powers that be that audiences watch television during the hotter season, Shark Week returns to Discovery to reclaim its hold as king of the ocean and reality television.
