So You Think You Can Dance: top 12 recap

Bollywood comes to Hollywood on So You Think You Can Dance.

Bollywood came front and centerThe bloom was off the rose for a couple of the “So You Think You Can Dance” favorites last night. Harsh words from the judges and lackluster performances might result in some surprises when the bottom three are announced tonight.

The top 6 couples each danced twice tonight and here’s how it went down.

Jessica King and Will Wingfield memorized the crowd into stunned silence with their Garden of Eden contemporary piece by Tyce Diorio. Their second dance, the Quickstep, was also stunning but not in a good way. It was sloppy and off the mark and it’s the first time I’ve really seen Will falter. But the worst part was when Mia Michaels said Will looked “tired” then added, “tired of carrying his partner.” What a slap in the face to poor Jessica, who would probably look like Grace Kelly if she were paired with anyone else.

Kherington Payne and Twitch Boss also fell down off of their high perch this week with a Tango that lacked passion. It was supposed to be a fight scene out of “Mr. and Mrs. Smith” but that didn’t come across at all. Earlier in the evening they did a hard-edged Krump. Kherington threw herself into it 200 percent but she couldn’t sustain it and you could visibly see her losing it by the end.

Comfort Fedoke and Thayne Jasperson What can I say? Thayne needs to go home tonight, not so sure about Comfort. They performed a Hip Hop routine that had a story behind it but they didn’t bring that home. Before that, their Mandy Moore Contemporary number simply fell flat as well. The couple took quite a hit from Nigel when he said he wished some other couple had been given that dance because it was wasted on them. Ouch.

Courtney Galiano and Gev Manoukian rose a notch in my book with a Cha Cha by Pasha and Anya! (I love Pasha). It wasn’t dead on with the steps but it was fun, sexy and entertaining. Sadly, their Jazz number, which was designed with a kind of “Indiana Jones” lost in the jungle theme, looked just like their lost in New York bit they did last week.

Chelsie Hightower and Mark Kanemura continue to grow on me with a sassy Salsa number that was fun to watch. It was fast and sexy and Chelsie looked fab. Their second number was a bluesy Broadway bit again from Tyce Diorio and I thought they had a great connection.

Katee Shean and Joshua Allen were the real surprise of the evening. They started with a Viennese Waltz and again, golden boy Joshua took a few hits for his lack of flow. But Katee looked so marvelous and the whole dance was wonderfully romantic. But the big news of the night was the first ever Bollywood number! Who would have thunk it?!

This exotic dance combined Hip Hop and African (another style they should do on the show) and some jazz and wow Katee was gorgeous. The intricate hand movements really sold the dance and for a big guy like Joshua, that’s a monumental feat.

Eliminations tonight? Comfort and Thayne, Courtney and Gev and Kherington and Twitch might just get a scare tonight.
