Johnny Depp: Pirates scores gold in first day on DVD

Pirates of the Carribean: Dead Man’s Chest dominates on DVD just as much as it took over the big screen…

pirates_hit.jpgSelling over 5 million copies today alone, Pirates of the Carribean: Dead Man’s Chest arrived in stores Wednesday to an avalanche of demand. The original film moved almost 18 million DVDs several years ago. By Dead Man’s passionate response on day one, that figure will most certainly be eclipsed this time. While the third installment of the franchise is finishing filming and editing, fans of Depp’s Captain Jack showed up in droves to be the first to bring home the hardly-understandable pirate. The DVD, which co-stars Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley, is filled with mind-popping extras including a sequence where Depp explains in such sarcastic joy the fun of filming the giant spinning wheel sequence. Buena Vista Entertainment, who releases the films, has got to be thrilled. Although expensive and expansive (the second two sequels were filmed back-to-back) the Pirates have made their mark on pop culture. The very DVD that scores were buying today sits as the year’s top grossing movie and has even moved into sixth place all-time. What list? Only the one with E.T. and Titanic atop it. That one.
