Emma Roberts and Garrett Hedlund revealed in August that they were expecting their first child together, debuting pics of glowing Roberts showing off her bump and letting it slip that they’re expecting a baby boy. By all accounts, Roberts and Hedlund have been looking forward to taking this new step in their lives after nearly two years of dating, but news of a previously unreported January DUI arrest has us hoping everything’s as sunny as it seems. According to court documents, Hedlund has been on probation ever since his February sentencing, completed a 30-day rehabilitation program, and has been regularly attending an addiction counseling program per the requirements of his plea deal. In other words, Hedlund has been taking these major steps toward addressing his addiction issues at the same time as they’ve learned of Roberts’ pregnancy and prepared for their first child’s arrival, an overwhelming time made all the more difficult.
Per Hedlund’s representative, the arrest may have been the wake-up call the actor needed — not that that’s how he put it.
“When the incident occurred, Garrett immediately sought treatment which was successful,” the rep told Us Weekly. “Today, he is in a solid and great place.”
According to the legal records of the case, Hedlund was arrested on two DUI charges (one was ultimately dismissed) after being pulled over and discovered to have a blood alcohol content of .36 percent (four times the legal limit). He was released on a $100,000 bail before his sentencing the following month, and, to our knowledge, Hedlund has faithfully completed the provisions of his plea deal thus far.
For those struggling with addiction, recovery can be a full-time job. In addition to Hedlund’s education and counseling programs, he’s attending mandated AA meetings and performing 100 hours of required community service, and all with a baby who’s getting closer to joining the family every day.
But while a dad-to-be being arrested for a DUI is scary, it’s nowhere near as scary as when it happens to a new dad. And we’re incredibly glad that Hedlund is getting treatment now.
