Outlander Star Caitríona Balfe Has a Must-Read Comeback for People Who Deny White Privilege

A strong message to Twitter trolls: Stay clear of Outlander‘s Caitríona Balfe. (Also, maybe just lay off in general?) Like so many across the world, Balfe took to Twitter to speak out against systemic racism, police brutality, and white privilege — the last of which struck a chord with some of her followers. After sharing an essay about white privilege, Balfe was met with one very insistent commenter who accused her of inciting unnecessary conflict. Balfe’s response? An epic four-part takedown that just makes us love her even more.

After Balfe posted the essay from Yes! Magazine, entitled “My White Friend Asked Me on Facebook to Explain White Privilege. I Decided to Be Honest,” Denise McAllister wrote back challenging the actress to a debate and condemning her for “falsely accusing a whole race of people of white supremacy and privilege.”

Balfe’s replies began with suggested reading material to help this woman educate herself: “I suggest you read White Fragility by Robin DiAngelo … you may find it illuminating. I also suggest that maybe you stop looking to reconfirm your already entrenched biases and take this moment as a potentially positive learning moment. Good luck to you.”

But McAllister was undeterred — and Balfe soon lost her cool. “Firstly Denise if you want to debate with someone best start off with correct FACTS. I’ve never said all white people are white supremacists BUT every white person is born into a specific white privilege.”

McAllister didn’t just go after Balfe’s viewpoints, but challenged her ability to engage in debate at all, suggesting the actress was out of her depth. Balfe was quick to call her out on this too: “Trying to make people feel small so you can make yourself feel tall also underscores my point … keep talking. You just keep showing yourself up! Bye.”

The icing on the cake? McAllister had been spelling her name incorrectly all along. “Oh and it’s Caitríona ..! For someone with your high education maybe you could spell my name correctly,” Balfe quipped.

And that, my friends, is how you take down a Twitter troll.
