If gearing up for mealtime with your kids feels a lot like going into battle, you aren’t alone. In fact, you’re in royal company! Even Prince William admits that dinnertime with kids is tricky business. In a new interview, the Duke of Cambridge hinted that his and Kate Middleton’s three children — Prince George, 6, Princess Charlotte, 5, and Prince Louis, 2 — can be picky eaters when it comes to their evening meal.
Chatting with community chef Charlie Farrally about the PEEK Project, William discussed “the importance of delivering healthy and nutritious food to the families [the charity supports] in Glasgow during lockdown.” And during that discussion Chef Farrally commented on the fact that having a food truck readily available takes a little pressure off of parents since “the hardest time is dinnertime.” And, well, William clearly knew exactly what the chef was talking about. “It depends on what’s on the table though, Charlie, isn’t it? And that’s the thing. If parents put something on children love, dinnertime goes on very well,” he said, joking, “But if you put something on the table they don’t want to do, that’s another ballgame.”
Of all the relatable things William has said, this may be the most relatable. Dinnertime, especially when you have a picky eater or more than one kid, is notoriously hit or miss. Sometimes quite literally, if you’ve got a toddler with a good throwing arm.
Like the rest of us, the Cambridges have been cooped up at home during the coronavirus pandemic (albeit, their home is a bit grander than ours). As William’s dinnertime revelation suggests, the family is focusing on quality time together — which, sure, probably includes the occasional argument over broccoli and Brussels sprouts.
He and Kate have also been figuring out how to balance their royal responsibilities with homeschooling George, Charlotte and Louis. Although if you ask Kate, they’re learning just as much from the kids as the kids are from them. Speaking to BBC in April, she gushed, “I don’t know how they get it done honestly. You sort of pitch a tent, take the tent down again, cook, bake [and] you get to the end of the day. They’ve had a lovely time, but it’s amazing how much they can cram into a day, that’s for sure.”
