Need a light-hearted feed to follow during the coronavirus crisis? Kelly Ripa just kicked off a “roots watch” to document her gray hair growth while social distancing. And, hello, we feel seen! It goes without saying that self-isolation means foregoing certain creature comforts, including the beauty appointments many of us routinely schedule. First world probs, we know — which is why we’re having fun with it by leaning into Ripa’s little social media experiment.
What will her hair look like when all is said and done? How about other celebrities, for that matter? It’s possible that some stars will be letting their natural hair color peek through for the first time in public. Ripa isn’t shying away from this inevitability. In fact, she shared a photo of her hairline on her Instagram Stories on Sunday, joking, “Root watch week one.” While most of her hair remains her signature blonde, a few decidedly not-blonde strands have already started to frame the part in her hair.
In a recent interview with The Strategist, Ripa referred to her natural color as “white, or like an Anderson Cooper gray.” And although she was quick to point out that the hue works for Cooper, it just isn’t her thing.
The Live With Kelly and Ryan host has no qualms about discussing her adventures in coloring and covering grays, either. “Lots of women are pretty hush-hush about dyeing their hair and having gray hair,” she said. “But I’m the opposite: I dye my hair, so what? And it is all dyed. Because my hair is actually gray, it has to be dyed dark first before it can be dyed blonde. I try to have it still look natural, but the color is not real.
Roots aren’t the only thing Ripa has been refreshingly (and hilariously) honest about during the pandemic. Just before she officially began her self-isolation, she took fans along for a pre-quarantine beauty procedure: getting Botox. Ripa gave a behind-the-scenes glimpse of her experience with New York City dermatologist Dr. Robert Anolik.
“In this time we can notice that there’s been a lot of worrying, you can see it is written all over my face, but Dr. Anolik decided to be brave today and come into work to treat my acute Botox deficiency syndrome,” she said. Once the procedure was over, she quipped, “Is there any Botox for anyone else doctor?”
Ah, Ripa — always one to keep it real. Or, you know, keep it real about being not entirely real. Here’s to seeing how this whole “roots watch” plays out. We’ll be monitoring our own Cooper-gray situation in solidarity.
