If you couldn’t get enough of Beyoncé’s January 2020 Elle cover story, wait until you see the stunning behind-the-scenes video the magazine just released. An exclusive behind-the-scenes glimpse into the making of Bey’s now-viral cover, the footage feels like a work of art in and of itself. So, while you couldn’t actually be there in person while Queen & Slim director Melina Matsoukas snapped photos of the iconic singer, consider this the next best thing.
Last week, Elle debuted their cover story with Beyoncé as part of their January 2020 cover feature — and, not surprisingly, it did not disappoint. Thanks to an intimate #AMA (Ask Me Anything) session between Bey and her Beyhive, fans got an uncensored, all-access pass to the superstar’s thoughts on everything from motherhood, how her miscarriages changed her, what she does for self-care, what she does with her seasons-past wardrobe, reclaiming her Ivy Park line and her sense of purpose. (We told you it was all-access!)
In this exclusive clip shared by Elle, we see the moments that went into creating Beyoncé’s full cover feature. It shows Matsoukas’ direction, Bey in character for shots, Bey out of character in between takes, the auxiliary crew involved in the production hard at work — all enhanced by ephemeral instrumental backing. Suffice it to say, it’s a sensory experience.
It’s been a big year for Beyoncé, the enormity of which stands to follow her into 2020. For starters, her highly-anticipated Ivy Park x Adidas partnership lands on January 18. And although the singer explained in her Elle interview that she doesn’t place meaning in awards and accolades anymore, her song “Spirit” from the live-action Lion King soundtrack has landed on the Oscars’ Best Original Song shortlist.
If it ends up on the official nominations list, to be released on January 13, Beyoncé could take home an Academy Award during the ceremony on February 9th.
