You don’t need a crystal ball to see into the future. Just take a look at photos of Kate Middleton and Prince William at the Diplomatic Reception held at Buckingham Palace on Wednesday night — it’s like flashing forward to their reign as queen and king. The queen-consort-to-be and her heir-to-the-throne husband (along with several other core members of the royal family) held court at the Diplomatic Reception in honor of members of the Diplomatic Corps.
For the event, Kate opted for an elegant long-sleeve navy blue velvet Alexander McQueen gown, which she accessorized with a statement piece: the Nizam of Hyderabad necklace. She also wore a sash, medals representing honors bestowed to her by the Queen and, of course, she topped the entire look off with a crown. The specific tiara she chose — the Lover’s Knot — has proven over the years to be a favorite of Kate’s, as it was of the late Princess Diana. Originally commissioned around 1913 from the jeweler Garrard by Queen Mary, the stunning headpiece is more than a quarter-century old and is actually a replica of an even older tiara owned by Mary’s grandmother, Princess Augusta of Hesse.
William looked the part too, wearing a sharp black tuxedo and sash that matched his wife’s.

Per Kensington Palace’s official Instagram account, “The reception, hosted by Her Majesty The Queen, was attended by members of the Diplomatic Corps based in London — who support the work of @theroyalfamily in representing the UK at home and abroad. Speaking of the royal hostess, Queen Elizabeth II, she (not surprisingly) set the standard for royal glamour in her emerald-and-diamond-encrusted Vladimir tiara and matching statement necklace. Kate and William undoubtedly took note of both the monarch’s sartorial style and regal decorum. Although they could have plenty of time still to learn from Her Majesty the Queen at events like this since, despite rumors circulating to the contrary, she reportedly has no plans to abdicate the throne.
