Kate Hudson and Dax Shepard Had a Seriously Dramatic Relationship — ‘Not Long’ Before He Met Kristen Bell

In today’s “celebrity couples you forgot existed” news, Kate Hudson and Dax Shepard revealed dramatic new details about why their relationship ended. Apparently, these two dated for a few fiery months back in 2007: the same year Shepard met now-wife Kristen Bell.

Hudson joined Shepard on his podcast, Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard, and the former couple wasted no time in getting candid about their past. When they first met — at Tobey Maguire’s house, no less — Hudson was married and Shepard was in a relationship, but sparks flew nonetheless.

“I wasn’t plotting anything,” Shepard says of their first meeting, “but I certainly wanted your approval and if you thought I was cute, all the better.” A year later, their paths crossed again at Nobu in Malibu, where Shepard pulled what Hudson now calls “the perfect move.”

“While we were there, we said, ‘Wouldn’t it be funny if we came out holding hands and I was your new boyfriend?'” Shepard recounted on the podcast. “We were just pals …And then we added, ‘Wouldn’t it be great if her new boyfriend didn’t wear a shirt at Nobu?'”

“I was acting mad at the paparazzi that they were invading our privacy. And then it just somehow led to hanging out.” Shepard explained.

Hudson chimed in: “Then I wanted to have sex with him.”

Shepard and Hudson both describe their three-month relationship as having high highs and low lows. “We laughed our asses off,” Hudson said, explaining that their personalities were “super compatible.”

But when they weren’t laughing, they were at each others’ throats: “You and I had fights that I really hadn’t had with people,” Shepard shared. “We had some big old barn burners.”

There was another troubling side to their dynamic too: “I felt very ‘less than’ around you quite often,” Shepard revealed to his ex. “I think I was just in the point where I was not gonna get hired for movies anymore — I had a bunch that didn’t work — and I’m like, ‘I don’t f—ing know what’s next.'”

In 2007, Hudson was working on projects like Fool’s Gold, My Best Friend’s Girl, and You, Me and Dupree. “I’m following this person around as they do things I wish I were doing,” Shepard reflected. “It was a rough period anyways and then I felt all kinds of inadequacy in that position.”

While Hudson wasn’t suffering from those same feelings of inadequacy, she remembers feeling like they were in different places in their lives. She’d recently divorced ex-husband Chris Robinson, with whom she shares 3-year-old Ryder, and was cautious about throwing herself back into something serious.

“I was out of a relationship that was really hardcore, then Dax and I — it was so much fun and then it got hot fast,” the Almost Famous star explains. “It got connective, and I wasn’t prepared. I was making a movie, I had Ryder.” She adds: “Honestly, I wasn’t giving Dax what he needed…I was making choices that were not relationship-focused.”

Shepard describes his position like this: “I was 32 going, ‘Whoever I date next has to be the one, I want to spend three years with somebody to know I want to have kids’” Shepard revealed. “I was ready to have kids and do it.”

In the end, Shepard says they “just parted ways,” while Hudson describes their breakup as “mutual-esque.” Shepard calls it a “super beneficial” relationship, revealing that he was monogamous for the first time in 15 years with Hudson.

He also learned important lessons about communication from their frequent, explosive fighting. “I literally learned how to say, ‘When you do this, I’m scared and I feel this way,'” Shepard admitted on the podcast.

One thing’s for sure: The timing couldn’t have been better. “I was so backed out that when he met his now-wife, which was not long after we broke up, it was, like, gung-ho time for you,” Hudson joked to Shepard. “You were ready for a real relationship.”

12 years later, it’s safe to say Dax Shepard and Kristen Bell’s relationship is as real as it gets.
