HBO is Planning a ‘Game of Thrones’ Prequel & We Have So Many Questions

Whether or not we want to admit it, HBO’s Game of Thrones had to come to an end — and stretching it past those 8 seasons would have been a mistake. (Hey, the 8th season itself may have been a mistake.) But with a GoT Targaryen prequel in the works at HBO, those of us who still want to live in George R. R. Martin’s world can do so happily, this time tracing 300 years back in the Targaryen family tree from when the events of GoT unfolded. Details are still vague — but they better trace that timeline all the way up to the Mad King.

According to Deadline, the Targaryen prequel was created by George R. R. Martin and producer Ryan Condal, and has been under discussion at HBO since late 2018. The project will be loosely based on the events of Martin’s Fire & Blood. Published in November 2018, Fire & Blood is Martin’s volume detailing the history of the Targaryen family, and intended to be read as a companion text to his Song of Ice and Fire series. The tagline reads: “300 Years Before a Game of Thrones, Dragons Ruled Westeros.”

As we know from GoT, the Targaryens’ home is Dragonstone. Martin’s book describes how they came to settle there, and their journey as the sole surviving dragonlords following the Doom of Valyria.

While we were really hoping for more recent details like Rhaegar’s affair with Lyanna Stark or Jaime Lannister stabbing the Mad King, it looks like Fire & Blood is way further in the past. The series will reportedly focus on the Targaryen Civil War (AKA the Dance of the Dragons), and begins in the age of Aegon the Conqueror (who, fun fact, created the Iron Throne we just watched people fight over for eight years).

Presumably, we’ll get more details about the series once the deal is finalized, though Martin has apparently been dropping hints on his blog since May. The Naomi Watts-led prequel remains the farthest-along of HBO’s GoT follow-ups, but Martin says at least two others are “moving forward nicely,” too. We’re hoping a Lannister prequel could be in the works too, or an Arya spinoff…truly, the possibilities are endless. We’re just glad the good people at HBO are on top of it.
