While there are undoubtedly many reasons for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex to look forward to their first royal tour with baby Archie, new details reveal one “particularly significant” aspect of their journey. Per the @SussexRoyal Instagram account, Prince Harry will continue Princess Diana’s legacy in Africa during the 10-day royal tour he’ll take with Meghan Markle. Specifically, Harry’s solo outing to Angola will serve as a special tribute to his late mother.
New details of Harry, Meghan and Archie’s royal tour of Africa — news of which first broke in June — were revealed via the couple’s official Instagram handle on Friday, outlining their agenda as they visit four countries. “In just two weeks, Their Royal Highnesses will embark on this official tour focusing on community, grassroots leadership, women’s and girls’ rights, mental health, HIV/AIDS and the environment,” the Instagram post read.
The family will spend a few days in South Africa devoted to charitable causes before Harry will set off on his own. According to the post, “The Duke is especially proud to continue the legacy left by his mother with her work in Angola as he joins Halo Trust again in an effort to rid the world of landmines.”
At a Buckingham Palace press briefing about the tour, Sam Cohen, Prince Harry’s private secretary, described the experience as a “particularly significant and poignant journey” for the Duke. Cohen went onto reference Princess Diana’s 1997 visit to Huambo, which “helped raise awareness of the threat posed by landmines to communities and livelihoods.” During that visit, the late Lady Di took her iconic walk through a cleared minefield in an effort to highlight the plight of those maimed by landmines.
During Harry’s visit, he will spend the night at a de-mining camp run by Halo Trust, the same charity Diana championed more than two decades ago. He will then remotely detonate a mine in a working de-mining field in southeastern Angola. Joana Lina, the Governor of Huambo, will host Harry — just as Lina did during Diana’s 1997 visit.
The special trip will be capped off by Harry visiting the orthopedic center Diana visited and unveiling the new name in honor of his mother.
