Now that the sting of a disappointing final Game of Thrones season has begun to fade, it seems HBO is determined to throw us back into misery. Or maybe we’re just being dramatic — you decide. Recently released, the Game of Thrones finale script explains why Drogon torched the Iron Throne, and to call it disappointing would be generous. The script was released due to the show’s record-setting 32 Emmy nominations, but all the critical acclaim in the world isn’t enough to stop us from expressing our frustration.
For those in need of a refresher: Drogon’s final, heroic moment (before he, er, flies off to maybe eat Dany’s body) was showing up to the Red Keep moments after Jon Snow killed Daenerys and burning down the Iron Throne. He then takes Dany’s body and flies off, leaving Jon in his dust. The moment was hailed far and wide as symbolic, poetic even. By burning down the Iron Throne, Drogon was burning down their true enemy: the compulsive desire for power that felled so many of our favorite GoT stars.
But according to the GoT finale script, this wasn’t a meaningful moment at all. Here’s how that scene actually goes on paper: “We look over Jon’s shoulder as the fire sweeps toward the throne ― not the target of Drogon’s wrath, just a dumb bystander caught up in the conflagration.” Not to be rude, but is this a freaking joke?! A “dumb bystander” indeed — maybe the real bystanders should have been David Benioff and D. B. Weiss, whose script choices are making us more livid by the minute.

In the end, the lovely thing about a television show is that it stops belonging to the creators the second other people view it. Whatever you saw in your mind when Drogon set that thing ablaze, that’s what happened. Regardless of what the original intention was, it was a moment that had meaning for viewers everywhere. Benioff and Weiss can never take that away from us.
