With the rise of social media, a new tradition has evolved for national holidays. The day of, we all celebrate; the day after, we all furiously check Instagram to see how celebrities did it. This year, we’re peeking in on how celebs celebrated July 4 — and sharing our favorite photos from the ‘gram. This year, celebrities went all out in traditional red, white and blue, and shared some pretty spectacular snaps of their adorable kids enjoying the sun-filled day. There are fireworks, flags and celeb tots as far as the eye can see. Personally, we can’t think of a better way to celebrate our independence.
While every holiday is a great opportunity to spend time with loved ones, July 4 is one of the best days of the year for wholesome family fun. It’s also one of the best days to get out on the water — and many celebs did just that, taking their kids to the nearest beach or lake. Many celebs’ captions emphasized what we celebrate on July 4: freedom and family, two things it’s important not to take for granted. While some celebrities celebrated America outright in their captions, most focused on the values that the holiday represents, and how grateful they are to be spending it among those they love the most.
Let’s take a look at some celeb — and celeb kids’ — July 4 celebrations.
Reese Witherspoon posted an adorable video of her and 6-year-old son Tennessee James Toth, whom she shares with husband Jim Toth. The mother-son duo are seen waving flags and a beach ball and beaming for the camera.
Kate Hudson shared a pic of sons Ryder Russell and Bingham Hawn enjoying some fireworks, captioned simply with heart and firework emojis.
Jennifer Lopez & Alex Rodriguez
Alex Rodriguez posted a sweet pic of himself with Jennifer Lopez and both of their children: on the left, twins Max and Emme from Lopez’s marriage to Marc Anthony; on the right, Rodriguez’s daughters Ella and Natasha, both from his marriage to Cynthia Scurtis. “From our family to yours, have a happy and safe July4th,” Rodriguez writes.
Chrissy Teigen & John Legend
Is it any surprise that Chrissy Teigen, queen of social media, posted a cute family pic for July 4? The photo and caption were both very low-key, featuring Teigen, John Legend and kids Miles and Luna holding some red and blue balloons with the caption “our little family!”
Courteney Cox opted to celebrate a different kind of family with her July 4 post: her chosen family of close friends. “Happy 4th everyone! I’m lucky to be spending it with so many girls that I love,” the Friends star writes, sharing a snap of her with Laura Dern, Jennifer Aniston, Jennifer Meyer, Suzanne Sommers and others.
Jenna Bush Hager
Today host Jenna Bush Hager shared a photo of her daughters Mila and Poppy decked out in red, white and blue attire, while playing with a baby doll. She added the joking hashtag “practicing for baby bro,” having revealed earlier this year that she has a boy on the way.
Country star Ashley Monroe hit the water in Tennessee to celebrate the 4th, sharing a picture of her and 2-year-old son Dalton William Danks. The excitement may have been a little much for young Dalton, as he’s fast asleep in his mother’s lap (aw!).
It looks like Mario Lopez had a classic beach day on the 4th: He and wife Courtney Laine Mazza, along with kids Dominic Luciano and Gia Francesca, celebrated the day with sun, sand and “Casa Lopez”-themed cornhole. What could be better?
Drew Barrymore also hit the beach on July 4th, posting a super-patriotic video of her and (presumably) one of her two daughters, Olive and Frankie, dancing behind a giant American flag. She also shares a close-up of her sun-kissed face, advertising Flower Beauty, her cruelty-free makeup line.
Gabrielle Union shared a simple, sweet family picture for the holiday: she and her husband, NBA player Dwyane Wade, grin for the camera with 9-month-old daughter Kaavia James Union Wade. “Fam on the 4th,” the caption reads, followed by heart emojis.
View co-host Abby Huntsman posted a picture of her three kids: her four-week-old twins, Ruby Kate and William Jeffrey, and her 1-year-old daughter Isabel Grace. She shares all three with husband Jeffrey Livingston and captioned the post: “This family loves America, total chaos, and any excuse to wear [red, white, and blue].”
Vanessa Lachey shared an adorable family picture in the water as well, with her and husband Nick Lachey juggling kids Phoenix Robert, Brooklyn Elisabeth and Camden John in their arms.
Singer-songwriter P!nk posted a picture of herself on a bicycle in Germany with two-year-old son Jameson, who she shares with husband Carey Hart. “May we all find independence wherever we are,” she writes.
