It’s incredibly rare to see members of the royal family do something spontaneous. Between their jam-packed schedules and strict rules of conduct, opportunities to go off-script are few and far between. So, it was especially delightful to see Kate Middleton and Prince William enjoy a secret date at a lakeside inn. For months, the couple has been dealing with rumors that William cheated on Kate with Rose Hanbury, the Marchioness of Cholmondeley, and — previously — a close friend of Kate’s. Could Kate and Will’s romantic afternoon be a sign that their relationship is on solid ground after all?
During a royal visit to Cumbria, the Cambridge couple stepped away from official engagements and popped into the Inn on the Lake in Ullswater for some relaxing time alone. A spokesperson from the Inn told Hello! that the couple had afternoon tea, commented on the lovely view and said they hoped to stay longer next time. While there, the Inn managed to snap a photo and post it to their Instagram: “We had two VERY special guests stop by today,” the caption reads, with photos showing Kate and William greeting hotel staff and waving goodbye.
Earlier this week, an Us Weekly source revealed Kate’s reaction to the ongoing cheating rumors. While she’s hurt and upset by how widespread they’ve become, she and Will are also using it as an opportunity to “examine their relationship.” Maybe that’s how they spent their time at the Inn — or maybe they just took a few hours to enjoy each other’s company and get away from all the drama. With the Instagrams of their date and their appearance at Trooping the Colour this year, these two appear happier than ever — so whatever they’re doing, it’s working.
