GoT Dragon Baby Theories, We See You But We’ve Got Some Serious Concerns

Warning: This article is dark and full of Game of Thrones season eight spoilers.

The most precious resource in Westeros is also the one resource that gave Daenerys a decent chance of beating Cersei in the battle for the Iron Throne: dragons. With two of her three dragons now dead (RIP Rhaegal and Viserion), Dany is going to protect her beloved Drogon at all costs, even if it means armoring him up or using him sparingly at the upcoming Battle of King’s Landing. But what if Game of Thrones revealed more dragons existed and Dany could use them to fight? One Reddit theory is positing the existence of more dragons and it’s certainly interesting to think about — but I’m still a little skeptical at how it could be possible.

Reddit user u/keon6 pondered on r/gottheories earlier this week about the possibility of more dragons living somewhere in Valyria that were fathered by Drogon and could now be large enough to be brought back to Westeros. “We all know that Drogon would fly off to unknown places from time to time and disappear (ie. When Jorah kidnapped Tyrion and took him to the ruins of Valyria, they see Drogon flying over),” Keon6 argues. “Maybe there are a few surviving dragons in Valyria and Drogon probably made some baby dragons over there. After all Drogon was in puberty and probably wanted some dragon on dragon action.”

Keon6’s theory isn’t entirely woo-woo, but it assumes some pretty big things. First off, the city of Valyria (the ancestral home of House Targaryen and the home of dragons) was destroyed thousands of years before the GoT timeline we all know began. Before Dany was gifted her three dragons at her wedding to Khal Drogo, it was believed that all of the dragons had died out with the destruction of Valyria, too; that’s what makes Drogon, Rhaegal and Viserion even more precious to her. At least two dragons would have had to survive the city’s demise in order to keep procreating which is a big “if” but considering a dragon given the freedom to grow and evolve can get huge as hell, we’d place good money on at least a few flying off and escaping to avoid being killed. It’s entirely possible Drogon flew off and ran into some of his distant relatives at some point.

Secondly, the topic of how dragons procreate is a big debate in the A Song of Ice and Fire books. Maesters, the most knowledgeable on the creatures, argue at length about how dragons give birth. Some have argued that dragons change sex at will, which means if the biological need to birth more dragons is there, dragons can switch to mate more easily. Others argue that all dragons are female, implying some form of miraculous virgin birth or self-insemination process that keeps dragons going (this might not entirely be accurate because we know Dany’s dragons are male). If dragons were well and truly wiped out, then Drogon is the last of his kind and he’d need to both be able to change his sex, birth a dragon and then find a safe place to raise his child away from prying eyes. Oh, and he’s probably had to have done it years ago since dragons take time to grow to their full size. Is Drogon capable of pre-planning?

Nitpicks aside, if there is even a shred of hope that at least one more dragon exists in the entirety of Westeros or Essos and, furthermore, Dany is able to bring it to King’s Landing, then it’s worth holding out hope. Dany and Jon need all the help they can get right now with a severely reduced army and little in the way of jaw-dropping, army-decimating weapons.
