All The Signs Daenerys Will Burn Varys Alive On Game Of Thrones

Warning: This article is dark and full of Game of Thrones season 8 spoilers.

It’s been a while since we’ve seen Varys fully in action, but episode 4 of Game of Throne’s final season showed him doing what he does best: saying what everyone is thinking. In conversation with another of Daenerys’ advisors, Tyrion Lannister, Varys openly addresses his concern over the Mother of Dragons’ recent behavior — and suggests that Jon Snow is the more stable option for the throne. Given that Dany has been extremely volatile lately, we can presume that Varys wouldn’t survive her finding out about this conversation. And as it turns out, numerous scenes and prophecies over the years have predicted Varys dying at Dany’s hand: specifically, at the hand (well, flame) of one of her dragons. Here’s every sign that Dany will burn Varys alive before the season is through.

Melisandre Prophesied Varys Dying In Westeros

Back in season 7, Melisandre (RIP) offered Varys ominous words concerning his fate: “I will return [to Westeros], dear Spider, one last time,” she says. “I have to die in this strange country, just like you.” While Varys isn’t a fan of those who practice magic, Melisandre has unfortunately had her prophecies proven true several times over (just ask Jon). If she says Varys is dying in Westeros, he’s likely dying in Westeros — though whether it’s in the immediate future, or of old age decades down the line, we can’t be sure.

Daenerys Has Threatened To Burn Varys Before

Early in season 7, when Varys is solidifying his relationship with Dany, she makes a rather straightforward comment. “If you ever betray me,” she says, “I’ll burn you alive.” Given the conversations Varys is having in this week’s episode — as Tyrion puts it, “we’re discussing treason” — Dany would be well within her rights to act on this threat.

Varys Has Sentenced Others To Death By Fire

As last week’s fan theory on Tyrion’s potential death pointed out, GoT has a pattern of killing characters in the manner that they’ve killed others. (It’s happened eight other times so far, including Olenna Tyrell, Ned Stark, Littlefinger, Ygritte and Ramsey Bolton.) We know that Varys was once tasked with delivering traitors to Aerys Targaryen for execution, and that the Mad King’s preferred method was burning victims with wildfire. Since Varys is responsible for numerous others dying by fire, there’s a strong possibility he will die by fire himself.

Varys Likely Dies By Fire In The Books

Yes, the plot of the HBO show has certainly diverged from the plot of the books: but we can still reference the original text for clues and ideas, as the showrunners no doubt did as well. While Varys’ death has not yet happened in the George R. R. Martin series, his championing of a different Targaryen for the throne has happened, and his death by wildfire (set off by Dany) is widely predicted. In fact, Varys is helping Aegon Targaryen, son of Rhaegar, claim the Iron Throne in the books: since Jon Snow has been revealed to be Aegon in the show, and Varys is leaning toward supporting his claim to the throne, the rest of his arc may not be so far off.
