Nothing could have prepared us for the epic season eight premiere of Game of Thrones, but now that the stage is set for the final season we’re eager to see how things play out. Thankfully, new GoT photos from season eight, episode two have been dropped into our laps. As we look through these photos for the coming episode — which will air on Sunday, April 21 on HBO — we can’t help but feel a sense of dread. That might be because everyone looks very somber or, as it’s been teased in the episode two promo trailer, it could be caused by the first battle between the humans and the White Walkers which is still looming.
The first photos that caught our attention from episode two were these two, which you can see below. In the first, Jon Snow and his sister (technically, it’s his cousin but why split hairs right now), Arya, are looking down at the same thing. A similar photo shows Varys, Daenerys and Jorah all looking quizzically to their right. The walls in both photos look the same, which leads us to believe all of these characters are in the same room and are likely looking at a map or battle plan. This would make sense since we know Tormund and the other men first seen at The Last Hearth in the season premiere will make their way to Winterfell and warn Jon about the undead rapidly making their way to the Stark residence.
Another interesting photo comes from what will be a huge moment in episode two: Jaime answering for his crimes against Daenerys Targaryen and her family. All the way back in season one, we learned Jaime was responsible for killing Daenerys’ father, The Mad King Aerys Targaryen II, and Jaime earned the nickname “Kingslayer” in the process. Aerys’s death led to his two living children, Daenerys and Viserys, fleeing Westeros and living in exile for most of their lives. The episode two promo trailer teases Daenerys telling Jaime about this during a trial that looks like it’s staged similar to Petyr Baelish’s surprise trial at Winterfell. Hopefully, Jaime’s trial ends differently than Petyr’s because we’d love to see him team up with Jon and Daenerys in future episodes.
Other photos from episode two highlight some of our faves, including Sansa, who appears to be holding a weapon of some sort, leading us to wonder whether she will actually participate in the fight against the undead; Bran, who is sitting contemplatively next to the Stark family weirwood tree and maybe even using his Three-Eyed Raven powers to track the White Walker army as it moves south; and Tyrion, looking like his old self as he slightly smiles and drinks wine.
Episode two is going to be even more action-packed — we have no doubts about that — and these new photos seem to indicate as much. Tune in on Sunday, April 21 at 9/8c on HBO to see how it all pans out.
