Giacomo Gianniotti Explains Why We Should Root for Meredith & DeLuca on Grey’s Anatomy

However you’re feeling about the current trajectory of the Meredith and DeLuca romance on Grey’s Anatomy, there’s at least one big-time fan of the couple who’s speaking his truth. Grey’s Anatomy star Giacomo Gianniotti recently opened up about why viewers should root for DeLuca and Meredith’s romance. Speaking to E! News, he explained how the romance came about in the mind of showrunner Krista Vernoff and how he thinks the future could look for these characters.

Gianniotti explained that Vernoff told him she wanted to change people’s perceptions of an older woman being with a younger man, hence why she introduced a potential romance between Meredith and DeLuca in season 14.

“She was like, ‘I want to flip that on its head. Why is it always the men that are always with these young women?’ It’s like nobody questions it, but when a woman is with a younger man, ‘Oh, it’s gross!’ Weird labels are attached to it. So, she said, ‘I would like to explore that, that it can be empowering and sexy to be with someone younger. They can rejuvenate you,'” Gianniotti said.

While fans are split on whether or not they’re into the idea of Meredith and DeLuca, Gianniotti said that doesn’t bother him.

“If you don’t have haters, you’re not doing it right,” he said, going on to say, “There’s always division in everything, you know what I mean? And I think for anyone who truly loves [Meredith] should definitely understand that someone who is widowed also deserves to have a companion and to experience love again and to have that fulfilling experience and that no one could ever hold a candle to her husband or that love story, but that person certainly deserves to have a love and companionship in their life.”

He added, “I hope people can kind of just understand that, and I would dare them to wait and see and try. There’s a lot more storytelling that we have to do.”

Much of that storytelling has to do with Meredith’s life outside of her relationship with DeLuca, which is informed by so many factors: she is a survivor, a widow and a single mom. If DeLuca wants to have a serious relationship with her, Gianniotti acknowledged that he has to be ready to take on at least some kind of parenting role, whatever Meredith may want that to be.

“That’s something that we’re sort of exploring mildly in the next coming episodes,” he teased. “It’s a very real issue. She’s a mother, that’s not going anywhere, so if he’s going to be with her, he’s got to be able to take that on in a big way, in a real way. I think that’s going to be a fun part that’s going to unlock a new layer of love that Meredith has for DeLuca, once she sees that he’s capable in that. I think that will really close the circle.”
