Ahead of the final season premiere of Game of Thrones in April, anticipation is high for the conclusion to HBO’s epic fantasy series. On Wednesday, series star Sophie Turner revealed a clue about Sansa Stark’s GoT arc in the final season. Needless to say, we’re more intrigued than ever by what’s to come in what will surely be an emotional and intense season.
When we last saw Turner’s character in season seven, Sansa was preparing Winterfell for war. She held down the fort and ruled the north while her cousin, Jon Snow (Kit Harington), traveled south. In season eight, Jon returns with Daenerys (Emilia Clarke), intending to bend the knee to her — which will surely inspire some strong words from Sansa. But that’s not all.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Turner said Sansa is preparing for the arrival of the Army of the Dead in a very specific way: “This is the first time I’ve had armor,” she said. Does that mean Sansa is going to fight physically, rather than relying on her incredible wits as she has for the last seven seasons?
“We [like] the idea of it being very protective and she buttons herself up,” Turner said, apparently choosing to reveal costume details rather than plot details — not that we blame her. The final season of Game of Thrones has been kept tightly under wraps. She continued, “I wanted her to have a bit of armor and be a bit more warriorlike. She’s like the warrior of Winterfell.”
HBO has yet to release photos of Turner in her armored costume. The first-look image of Sansa in season eight shows her presumably in the room where key decisions are made at Winterfell, and she looks deeply unimpressed by whatever (or whomever) is before her.
Whatever happens in Game of Thrones season eight, one thing is for sure: it’s going to be a wild ride.
Game of Thrones returns to HBO on Sunday, April 14.
